If you are suffering from osteoporosis, you may be given a prescription for Boniva. Osteoporosis is a condition in which an individual's bones begin to become weak and brittle, and may break easily. It is primarily given to women who are suffering from osteoporosis as a result of menopause. Boniva belongs to a group of medicines which are known as bisphosphonates. The medicine works by reducing or preventing the breakdown of bone, and by increasing the thickness of the bone by increasing the bone density.

The medicine comes in the form of a tablet pill which is taken orally. The 2.5 milligram tablet is typically only taken once a day in the morning, without any food. Alternatively, a 150 milligram tablet can be taken once a month in the morning on an empty stomach. The 2.5 milligram tablet should be taken at about the same time each day, and the 150 milligram tablet should be taken on the same day of each month. Before you start using the medication, make sure that you follow all of the instructions that come with the prescription. If there is anything that you do not understand, have your doctor or your pharmacist explain it to you. Don't take it more or less often than your doctor recommends, and don't alter your dose.

If you do not fully understand the directions, Boniva can harm your esophagus or cause you to experience sores in your mouth. It must be taken first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything. It should not be taken before bed or if you plan to return to bed. The tablet must be taken with a full glass of water. It must be water, not any other liquid. The tablets should be swallowed whole, never chewed, split, or crushed. Nothing else should be consumed for the next hour, not even medications or supplements. Stay upright for the entire hour.

It is important to realize that Boniva is a treatment for osteoporosis that can be quite effective, but it is not a cure. It can prevent and treat the disorder for only as long as it is being taken. Keep using it even if you start feeling better, and do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor first.

While you are using the medication, you should be sure to consume foods that are high in calcium and vitamin D, and you may want to ask your doctor about a supplement as well.
