Chantix Coupon Details

Chantix is the brand name of the generic medication varenicline. Varenicline is prescribed as a course of action in attempts at tobacco smoking cessation. It is used in conjunction with behavioral modification, lifestyle changes, and counseling to help individuals to stop smoking cigarettes or other nicotine-containing products. Pfizer markets the drug as Chantix in the United States, but in Canada it is marketed as Champix.

How it Works
Chantix is a nicotinic receptor partial agonist. The drug interacts with the human nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, blocking nicotine from binding to it. Varenicline does not produce the same stimulating effects as nicotine because it does not allow the receptor to stimulate the mesolimbic dopamine system.

How it is Used
Chantix is a tablet that is taken by mouth. It is swallowed with a full glass of water once or twice daily after a meal. The drug is prescribed in a low dose initially, and it is gradually increased over the course of the treatment. The treatment is usually started one week before the patient tries to stop smoking.

Treatment with varenicline usually lasts for a total of 12 weeks. If unable to quit smoking during this 12 week period, another 12 week treatment may be prescribed. It is not recommended to continue taking the drug for over 24 weeks. If a patient smokes during the course of treatment, it should still be continued in the hope that the lapse is an isolated incident.

Precautions
The following precautions should be taken before trying to stop smoking the aid of Chantix:
• Alert a doctor to known allergies.
• Alert a doctor if you are taking other medications including over-the-counter medications and nutritional/herbal supplements. Some drugs to be wary of are blood thinners, insulin, other smoking cessation drugs, nicotine products, and theophylline.
• Alert a doctor if you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.

Chantix has recently been linked to severe changes in behavior that can include sudden hostility, agitation, depression, and thoughts of suicide. The link to these changes in behavior has not been conclusively proven, but is under investigation. Changes may occur during the treatment or after treatment and in people who have otherwise had no history of mental health issues.
