Coumadin Coupon Details

Coumadin, one of the name brands of generic warfarin sodium, is a coagulant used in the treatment and prevention of blood clots in the lungs and legs. Additionally, Coumadin is widely prescribed as part of a regimen following heart-valve replacement or in cases of atrial fibrillation, or too-rapid heartbeat.

Warfarin itself was developed as a rodenticide. In the early 1950s, it was discovered that this chemical was also useful in the treatment of thrombosis and embolism, the formation and movement of abnormal blood clots in the body. It is manufactured by several companies under several names. Coumadin is made and marketed by Squibb-Bristol Myers.

Regular blood tests are by a physician are essential when a patient is on Coumadin. Dosages often require careful and frequent recalibration. Too much could cause a possibly life-threatening hemorrhage, while too little could increase the risk of clots.

The specific procedure used in measuring the level of Coumadin in the blood is the PT/INR test. It indicates how long it takes for blood to clot. The appropriate range is patient-specific. Generally speaking, a PT/INR score of 4 of higher is cause for concern.

Coumadin is contraindicated for pregnant women because of the risk of hemorrhage, damage to the fetus, or fetal death.

Coumadin-related bleeding is most common in patients 65 or older. People with cancer, some types of brain and kidney disorders, past bleeding of the intestine or brain, anemia, injuries, or who have been taking the drug for a long period of time need close monitoring. Other medications may also increase or decrease the effects of this drug.

Eating a normal diet is fine when taking the drug. However, consuming large amounts of leafy green vegetables may inhibit its effectiveness because of the large amounts of vitamin K contained in these foods. Vitamin K is a nutrient associated with the body's blood-clotting mechanism. Cranberries and cranberry products shouldn't be eaten and alcohol should be avoided as well.

Those undergoing prolonged treatment with Coumadin need to be extra vigilant about their bodies. If a blood clot forms and travels to a body part, circulation to that area can be reduced or entirely blocked. The surrounding tissue is starved of blood and oxygen and begins to die. Without rapid medical treatment, amputation or death are possibilities.
