Enbrel is the trade name for the drug Etanercept, which is used to treat chronic autoimmune, inflammatory diseases. It works by blocking or inhibiting the effects of naturally present tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which helps cause inflammation in the body. It is a prescription medication that is injected into the body.

Doctors prescribe Enbrel for treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, moderate to severe juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS).

Enbrel affects your immune system and may lower your body's ability to fight infections such as tuberculosis, fungal infections, and bacterial or viral infections. While taking Enbrel, some people have contracted these infections and some have died from them. The risk of getting cancer or lymphoma is also higher.

Other severe side effects include multiple sclerosis, allergic reactions, seizures, heart failure and blood problems. Some of these can be potentially fatal. More common side effects include irritation or swelling at the injection site, headaches, nausea and upper respiratory infections.

Before taking Enbrel, you should talk to your doctor about your medical history and list any medications you are on, including herbal medications. Also tell your doctor about any allergies you might have, vaccinations you recently received or are scheduled to receive, and any information regarding pregnancy if that is applicable.

Also inform your doctor about your residential history including place of birth and travel history. Some regions within the United States have a higher rate of fungal infections, and there is a higher risk of contracting TB in certain countries.

Before starting treatment, you should get tested for TB and also examined for open cuts or sores, signs of an infection, and other medical problems. Every aspect of your past and present medical history should be discussed and all pertinent testing be complete so that your doctor can evaluate whether Enbrel is right for you.

If Enbrel is prescribed to you, make sure that you fully understand the dosing instructions and procedures. Your doctor or a nurse will show you how to inject the medication safely. Enbrel can be self-injected or injected by another person who is trained and knowledgeable about the drug.

To store this medication, keep it in its original container, do not shake it, and keep it away from light. Enbrel should be kept in the refrigerator at 36° to 46°F and should never be frozen.
