Levaquin Coupon Details

Levaquin, otherwise known as levofloxacin, is used to combat life-threatening bacterial infections or infections that have proven to be resistant to other antibiotics. It was first patented in 1987 and was approved for use in the United State by the FDA in 1996. It was the most-prescribed drug in its class in the world in 2007, due to its versatility and strength.

Levaquin is available in multiple dosages in pills, injections, solutions, and also in ear and eye drops. It is approved for use in adults to combat several forms of pneumonia, urinary tract infections, inhalation anthrax, sinusitis, and bronchitis. Depending on the severity of the infection and the regulations of the individual country in which it is being used, Levaquin may be used for virtually any bacterial, antibiotic-resistant infection.

Pregnant women should never take Levaquin. The drug passes freely through the placenta into the fetal tissues. This can cause spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, and birth defects. This drug also passes into breast milk at high doses, so nursing mothers should either not take Levaquin. Be sure to discuss your antibiotic choices with your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.

Levaquin is also not suitable for children. This drug is known to cause musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis, gait abnormality, and tendonopathy. There are many other classes and types of antibiotics that do not carry these unfortunate side effects that should be used on children.

This drug also has the potential to build up in the blood, especially in patients with renal dysfunction. Because the drug is filtered out by the kidneys, levels can quickly rise to toxic levels if the renal system is not functioning well. Because treatment can take anywhere from three to 60 days, it is important that serum levels be tested periodically to avoid a potentially-lethal overdose complications.

Levaquin has several side effects in a wide range of severity. Mild side effects range from nausea, vomiting, temporarily blurred vision, and malaise. Some patients have suffered permanent blindness, seizures, hypoglycemia, and irreversible neuropathy.

It should also be noted that resistance to Levaquin and other antibiotics can occur rapidly in the individual at any stage of treatment. For this reason, it is suggested that this drug only be prescribed after the patient has completed and failed with another antibiotic course.
