Levitra is a medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence. Impotence is the inability to either get an erection or maintain an erection. The way this drug works is by increasing blood flow to the genitals. Chemically, it's closely related to other similar drugs like Viagra and Cialis, but differs structurally in some small ways. It is also often prescribed to treat premature ejaculation, because in some patients it's able to greatly increase the time between penetration and ejaculation. Patients will need to take this medication about 60 minutes before sexual activity, and should not be taking it more than once a day.

The name of the chemical used in Levitra is vardenafil. It is FDA and WHO approved, and is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of impotence. It typically comes in small, orange tablets.

The most common side effect of Levitra is nausea, but a number of other side effects can happen as well. Some less common side effects are back pain, abdominal pain, abnormal vision, eye pain, rash, itching, and a drop in blood pressure. In rare instances, a side effect of this drug is having a heart attack, as well as priapism. Priapism, in this case, is the inability of the penis to return to the flaccid position, and is considered an emergency medically because of the damage it can cause. The FDA has also issued a warning that Levitra can cause possible deafness, and this warning has been added to the drug labels.

The dosage for Levitra is fairly standard and does not differ greatly from patient to patient. While it's usually available in 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets, the starting dose for most patients is 10 mg. In some areas, not all dosages will be available. After the starting dose is used, the patient's doctor will work with them to determine if the dosage needs to increase, decrease, or stay the same.

Some men are particularly self-conscious about erectile dysfunction, so they can find it difficult to talk about it. If you are already taking Levitra, however, and you start to have any of the serious side effects, it's absolutely critical that you stop taking it and talk to your doctor. Your doctor may want to change your dosage, try another medication, or stop treatment completely for some period of time.
