Ortho Evra Coupon Details

Ortho Evra is a contraceptive patch. It contains ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin and is worn on the skin of the buttock, upper outer arm, abdomen, or upper torso. One patch per week is worn for three weeks out of the cycle with the fourth week being patch free. The hormones in Ortho Evra work to prevent pregnancy both by preventing ovulation as well as by changing the lining of the uterus and the cervical mucous. The first patch is applied either on the first day of the menstrual cycle or on the first Sunday after that. If a Sunday start is desired, the woman should use a back up form of contraception for the first week after starting the patch. Like all hormonal forms of birth control, efficacy may be reduced during antibiotic use and a secondary form of contraception should be used. St. John's Wort also reduced the effectiveness of the patch.

There are several possible side effects when using Ortho Evra. The most common of these include nausea, vomiting, reaction at the application site, headache, breast tenderness, menstrual cramps, breakthrough bleeding (spotting), and upper respiratory tract infection. Less common side effects include hair loss, weight gain or loss, changes in appetite, vaginal itching, white vaginal discharge, and difficulty in wearing contact lenses.

The use of the contraceptive patch also increases the risk of some life threatening conditions such as heart attack, blood clots and stroke. These risks are higher in women that use the patch than in women who use contraceptive pills. While these complications are rare, the risk is increased in women that smoke. Use of Othro Evra may also increase the risk of breast and endometrial cancers, gall bladder disease, and liver tumors.

The contraceptive patch is contraindicated for some women. These include women with a history of heart attacks, blood clots, or stroke, women with certain cancers, as well as those who are or might become pregnant. Women over age 35 who smoke also should not use the contraceptive patch.

Use of Ortho Evra does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Male condoms should be used in addition to the patch to protect against these diseases.
