Prilosec Coupon Details

Prilosec is a brand name for the drug omeprazole. It is one of a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors that decrease the amount of acid that the stomach produces. It is used to treat the symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions of persistent heartburn or caused by excess stomach acid. Because it limits the production of stomach acid, it is also used to treat erosion of the esophagus caused by excess acid. Prilosec is used as a long-term treatment for people who have continuous problems with excess acid; it is not used to provide immediate relief of symptoms.

Prilosec is available in prescription and over-the-counter doses. Prilosec OTC, the over-the-counter version, should only be taken once a day for two weeks. If you need to take it for a longer period or more frequently, you should see your doctor to discuss prescription treatments for your condition.

Heart patients should be careful when taking Prilosec or other drugs that treat heartburn. Because heartburn is often confused with early symptoms of a heart attack, cardiac patients should carefully monitor themselves for other symptoms of heart problems like difficulty breathing, pressure on the chest, pain the arm or shoulder, or sweating.

You should not take Prilosec if you are allergic to omeprazole (the active ingredient), or any other drug in the class of benzimidazoles like albendazole or mebendazole. Because Prilosec may affect the liver, you should talk to your doctor about taking it if you have any liver disease. You should also talk to a doctor about taking Prilosec if you have symptoms of heart disease or bleeding ulcers. Symptoms of the latter include vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds, bloody stools, black stools, or stomach pain.

Side effects of Prilosec include stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or headaches. Patients with allergic reactions may experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling in the face, lips, throat, or tongue. If you experience any of these reactions, you should stop taking Prilosec immediately and talk to your doctor. For patients who take Prilosec long-term, the drug may increase the risk of bone fractures in the hip, spine, or wrist. Patients who have osteoporosis or osteopenia should talk to their doctor because taking Prilosec.
