Promethazine Coupon Details

Promethazine is a strong sedative that is often prescribed when the patient cannot take benzodiazepines. It is useful for treating insomnia, nausea, hay fever, can be mixed with codeine in cough syrup, and is also indicated for use with other drugs to combat seasickness and severe morning sickness (hyperemesis). The drug can also be used for anxiety prior to a medical procedure in both children and adults. This helps them sleep, but they are easily awoken. It is also used post-surgery to avoid vomiting due to anesthesia, as well as pre-surgery and for obstetrical procedures. While it can bought without a prescription in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, and many other nations, it is controlled and available only by prescription in the United States.

Side effects include confusion in the elderly. Dizziness, drowsiness, and, sometimes, vertigo, has also been reported. Promethazine also causes dry mouth, constipation, and, very rarely, euphoria when administered intravenously. In infants and those with compromised pulmonary function, respiratory depression has been noted and should be monitored. A sensation of chest pressure has also been reported by those with elevated blood pressure. Short temper, irritability, and restless legs have also been reported in some patients. In extremely rare cases, seizures and neuroleptic malignant syndrome have occurred.

When administered intravenously, it is important to note that a 25mg dose should be given very slowly over the course of ten to fifteen minutes. Administering the medicine too quickly can result in a rapid reduction in blood pressure.

It is also important to understand that Promethazine impairs the central nervous system. Patients taking this drug should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or undertake any potentially hazardous tasks. Alcohol and other depressants should also be avoided, as they amplify this effect.

In 2009, the court case Wyeth vs Levine went all the way to the Supreme Court when Promethazine was pushed into an IV incorrectly. This lead to gangrene and the amputation of the patient's arm below the elbow. The case awarded six million dollars to plaintiff. To preempt this possibility in the future, Promethazine is now packaged with more stringent warnings on its correct intravenous use. This set a medical precedent forcing drug companies to include more succinct warnings and instructions with its products.
