Sertraline is a drug used to treat depression, belonging to a class of drugs called SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). It may also be used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It is currently the most prescribed antidepressant medication in the U.S., sold under the brand names Zoloft or Lustral.

Sertraline hydrochloride is manufactured in either pill form, with dosages of 25, 50 and 100 mg, or liquid form, with each dose being 20 mg. The pill form is usually stored at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. The liquid form must be diluted before taking.

Sertraline's side effects tend to be less severe than most antidepressants. The most common ones are nausea, increased sweating, trouble sleeping, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, loss of appetite and upset stomach. More severe but less common effects of sertraline are decreased libido, bruising or bleeding easily, muscle cramps, or unusual and unexplained weight loss. If side effects persist or are severe, seek medical attention.

In 2005, the FDA issued a black box warning for sertraline and most other SSRIs, indicating that these drugs were not suitable for treating depression in those under the age of 18. A warning was also included that prescribing sertraline to patients between the ages of 18 and 24 might increase the risk of suicidal tendencies. This drug is not routinely prescribed to patients under 18 except in limited circumstances, such as severe obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Sertraline is most effectively used for patients who are suffering from moderate to severe depression, obssessive-compulsive disorder, and dysthymia, but may be used for other mental illnesses. When used for obsessive-compulsive disorder combined with depression, it performs better than most other drug therapies. Social anxiety disorder often requires higher dosages to bring about results than other disorders, and may only improve quality of life significantly with the most impaired patients. Patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder commonly see improved sexual and social functioning, despite the reputation of SSRIs depressing sexual function and desire.

When stopping taking sertraline, it is best to decrease the dosage gradually, or discontinuation or withdrawal symptoms will occur. Symptoms of the withdrawal can include irritability, disturbing dreams, dizziness and headache.
